Mending Class

This class is for students who know how to use a machine and want to learn how to repair clothing.

By the end of this class, students will learn to...
  • sew on a button using a sewing machine
  • repair seams
  • replace a drawstring
  • hem a shirt, pants, shorts, etc.
  • alter the length of a pair of pants
  • take in pants that are too big
  • patch a hole
  • fix zipper issues

Tools students will need:
  • Basic sewing foot
  • Zipper foot
  • Bobbins
  • Scissors
  • Pins (longer is better)
  • Sewing machine (check to make sure it is in working order)Seam ripper

Materials students will need:
  • 1 pair of pants with a zipper (see notes below)
  • 1 pair of pants with a drawstring or a hoodie with a drawstring
  • 1 shirt with buttons (see notes below)
  • Neutral thread (white, gray, tan, etc.)
  • Coordinating thread (match the pants)
  • 1 fat quarter or patch

Notes about choosing clothing:
  • The items you bring are for practice, so they may not be usable when you’re done. If you do not have clothing at home, consider purchasing something from a thrift store.
  • The size of the clothing is not important, but it is easier to hem adult-sized clothing than children’s sizes.
  • If you plan to bring items you want to repair for use, make sure to bring coordinating thread, extra buttons (if missing), a zipper (if it’s broken), and a drawstring (if missing) for the garments.

WE WILL CONTACT YOU WHEN THE NEXT CLASS IS SCHEDULED
